Happy (A Sad Song)

by Margot Vandersmissen

I close the door behind me as my thoughts open up
I burn my tongue on my tea, make a lazy blanket fort
I need to write, I need to think I really need to feel
I need to make these dark clouds seem valid, seem real

I pick up a pen I pick up my mind
Pick up the bits of me that I left behind
i’m ready ot let my thoughts pour out
But instead I write

about a happier day that doesn’t belong to me
sweet words whispered on tv
a pretty smile, a perfect ending
so close your eyes let’s start pretending

That if I write a happy song
my thoughts will start to sing along

Am I a coward for shying away from my brain
when my smile’s been brave all through the day
Tears stain my pillow, salty pride
As I write

Another story is told
Another tale I stole
From bluer skies and better lives
I dust of my smile
and after I while
I start singing

Now I’ve sung a happy song
I’m still waiting for my thoughts to sing along
